Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for Consumers

How do I know if a therapist is qualified to work with me?

Each of the therapists on Therapy Road have their credentials verified. So, when you see the “Verified” badge on a therapist’s profile, you know that they have either met the necessary requirements in their state to be licensed and maintain and active license, are practicing under the supervision of another therapist’s license, or are registered with their respective state to practice therapy. It is then the therapists’ responsibility to list up to six areas of specialty in which they are skilled and trained.

How should I go about selecting a therapist?

While you can select a therapist based on a number of variables, we recommend selecting a therapist who works with individuals of your age and whose specialties meet your needs. Next, we suggest that you select a therapist with whom you feel that can be comfortable. The success of therapy is related to the relationship that you have with your therapist and while you may choose to select a therapist based on age, gender, or years of experience, these variables do not consistently predict successful therapeutic outcomes.

What should I do if I type a specialty and am not able to select the “Next” button?

If we do not recognize exactly what it is that you are looking for, please click the “View Specialties” tab and select the specialty that seems most appropriate to you.

How is the distance between therapist and consumer calculated?

The distance is measured from the center point of the therapist's zip code and the center point of the zip code entered during the search process. While approximate, we've found that this form of measurement provides users with consistent measurements without having to ask for private information such as the user's address.

I am also looking for medication, how do I know if a therapist is able to prescribe?

If you are looking for work with someone who is able to provide medication, look for their profile to say “Yes, I can prescribe” to the right of their profile picture while viewing their full profile. You may also search under the specialty of “Medication Management.”

What do all of the letters behind the therapists’ names mean?

Therapists can have a number of different degrees, specializations, licenses, and certifications. The letters behind their names can serve as an indicator to the length of a therapist’s education and any specializations that they may have. If you would like to learn more about the different credentials, click here.

My insurance company isn’t listed, what are my options?

We are sorry to hear that your insurance company is not listed. In this case, you have a few options. First, we recommend selecting the “View List of Providers” tab when you are asked to enter your insurance. Your insurance company may be listed here under a slightly different spelling. If this does not help, you can select your form of payment as either “Out of Pocket” or “I Don’t Know” and view all therapists who meet your selected criteria. You can then select a therapist who is “out-of-network” with your insurance company. What this means is that you would likely pay the full rate for a therapy session and then submit a claim to your insurance company manually. In some cases, insurance companies will partially or fully reimburse the cost of therapy services. We recommend calling your insurance company prior to your appointment to inquire about this. If this option does not interest you, you can also call your insurance company and request a list of providers in your area who are in-network with your insurance plan.

How long do therapy sessions usually last?

This is something that can be determined by you and your therapist. However, therapy sessions often last between 45 and 60 minutes.

How often should I attend therapy?

This is something that should be discussed with your therapist as each individual is different. Session frequency can range from multiple meetings per week, to once per week, to once every month.

How long will I be in therapy?

This varies on your presenting problem, needs, progress, and your therapist’s approach. We recommend having this conversation with your therapist.

Can I receive therapy via programs like Skype, telephone, or email?

We understand that due to personal preference, comfort levels, and schedules, these methods, known as teletherapy may be preferred. If a therapist offers teletherapy, look for their profile to say, “I provide teletherapy” to the right of their profile picture when viewing their full profile. If you do elect to engage in teletherapy, we recommend that you discuss with your therapist the steps that they will take to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

I am not sure if I need therapy, what should I do?

There are many ways to restore balance, happiness and mental health in your life. If your current methods do not seem to be working for you, it is perfectly acceptable to consider seeing a therapist. Here at Therapy Road, we are dedicated to increasing access to mental health services and helping people like you recognize that therapy services are just one of the many tools available to you that can help get you back on track to living a healthy, meaningful, life.

I cannot find a therapist that seems to fit my needs, where else can I look?

We are sorry that we were not able to help. A good place to start may be to call your insurance company and get a list of providers in your area. Additionally, you may want to use another therapist directory. If you are in a state of emergency, please call 9-1-1 or visit your nearest emergency room.

FAQs For Therapists

How can I let users know that I am in-network with insurance panels that are not listed on Therapy Road?

If you are in-network with an insurance company that we do not have listed, please contact us at support@therapyroad.com and let us know. We are happy to add this for you and recognize that our current offerings are not exclusive. In an effort to keep the site clean, we only list insurance companies that are actively accepted by our members.

I offer therapy services at different rates, why am I only able to enter one rate?

We understand that your rates may vary based on the service provided (e.g., intake assessment, couple’s therapy, individual therapy). To keep this simple for consumers, we ask you to list your average session rate.

Why can I only list six specialties?

This is our way of ensuring that potential clients are provided with the highest level of care possible. While many therapists consider themselves generalists, we ask that you select up to six areas in which you feel you are most competent. This also helps to reduce crowding in specialty areas and prevents therapists from selecting numerous areas of specialty as a means of increasing their visibility.

How can I make my profile stand out from other members on Therapy Road?

Consumers often select therapists based on perceived compatibility and relatability. We also know that therapeutic success is also influenced by the therapist-client relationship. Therefore, we have carefully considered the ways that we can provide therapists with the opportunity to personalize their profiles and market their individuality. We recommend that you take advantage of these opportunities by uploading quality photos of yourself, your office and anything else that may lend a glimpse into your personality or therapeutic style. Additionally, under each of your listed specialties, we recommend that you share your approach, understanding, view, or qualifications related to each area.

Can I list my group practice?

At this time we feature individual practitioners only. In the future, we will be adding a feature which will allow group practices to have their own page which will house the profiles of the individual therapists at that practice.

I also offer group therapy, how can I let consumers know this?

You can include information about your groups either under your specialty area or in your professional bio. In the future, we will be adding a “Group Therapy” search option and you will be able to feature your groups more explicitly.

Can I list my theoretical orientation?

You are welcome to include this information while describing your approach to your various specialties and in your professional bio. At this time, we do not offer theoretical orientation as an advanced search option for consumers. This may be an added feature in the future.

How is the distance between therapist and consumer calculated?

The distance is measured from the center point of the therapist's zip code and the center point of the zip code entered during the search process. While approximate, we've found that this form of measurement provides users with consistent measurements without having to ask for private information such as the user's address.

How will potential clients be directed to Therapy Road and to my profile?

Therapy Road is dedicated to increasing access to mental health consumers by making the process of finding therapists more transparent and making services more easily accessible. In addition to guiding consumers to the site through Internet searches, we are committed to public marketing as a means to increase Therapy Road’s visibility and promote its use among the general population.

What if I am not accepting new clients at this time?

If, for whatever reason, you are not accepting new clients, you can hide your profile visibility by logging into your account, select “Edit Profile” and toggle your visibility with the toggle option on the top right corner.
